Summer is upon us, and that means Western Reserve Playhouse is open for business once again. The venerable venue is kicking off its 2017 schedule with the British comedy It Runs in the Family, and it couldn’t have picked a better way to start the season.

Playwright Ray Cooney has set his frenetic farce in a hospital at Christmas. Dr. Mortimore is getting ready to make an important speech to his clients when a nurse from his past reveals that they had a child together. Talk about bad timing!

Jim Volkert finds the funny bone in every scene of this playful play. He has also cast the show to perfection, with Vincent Sarowatz and Dan Williams leading the way at the frenzied physicians at the center of the chaos. Tina Davis delights as Nurse Tate, Hanna Case is a wild child as the daughter, Linda Schneider portrays Mortimore’s supportive wife, Irv Korman is excellent as the exasperated Sir Willoughby Drake, and Eric S. Grow adds to the merriment as a fellow doctor.

The rest of the intriguingly inventive ensemble includes Marc Dusini, Debbie Lang, Meredith McDermott, and Kathy Pekarick. Irv Korman practically steals the show as a wheelchair-bound visitor from another ward.

The hilarious hijinx are embellished by the technical team at WRP. Walt Kaminski’s medical milieu sets the scene, Brandi Eaton contributes compelling costumes, Jim Gremba offers solid sound design and director Volkert adds the expert lighting.

If laughter is the best medicine, then Western Reserve Playhouse’s It Runs in the Family has the cure audiences are looking for!
